Police apprehended two individuals Tuesday night after a car crashed into the Lion’s Park sign, toppling it to the ground.
Sergeant Blaine Gervais from the Oliver RCMP reported that the same vehicle was previously observed driving northbound from Osoyoos.
“When the RCMP member attempted to stop the vehicle it fled at a high rate of speed. The RCMP member did not pursue due to risk to the public’s safety,” Gervais said.
Once in Oliver, the suspect vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the sign at approximately 9 pm.
One witness in the park said he saw the vehicle driving very fast and lose control. The man said the vehicle went airborne over the grass and collided with the wooden sign post, which was rotting away at the bottom.
The witness said two men jumped out of the vehicle and started running across the park. He then observed police officers looking for the men with a canine search dog.
Gervais said the suspects were located a short time later, uninjured.
Charges are being considered.
Gervais said anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the local RCMP or Crimestoppers.
