— Councillors say Premier will help Desert Park revitalization bid —
(OSOYOOS TIMES — October 3, 2007) —
Osoyoos Mayor John Slater and councillors returned to town from last week's Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) convention in Vancouver buoyed by the response they got from Premier Gordon Campbell and three of his cabinet ministers to Osoyoos' lobbying for proposed slot machines to revive the local Desert Park horse-racing track.
Slater told the Oct. 1 Council meeting, We're very encouraged.rnCouncillor Allan Carswell said Monday that after hearing Osoyoos' case, Premier Campbell told them he will do what he can to help the proposal succeed.
And Carswell said Solicitor General John Les, Economic Development Minster Colin Hansen and Tourism Minister Stan Hagen all appeared to react favourably to the proposal.
Osoyoos was told to keep meeting with the B.C. Lottery Corporation and try to work something out with the competing casino bid from the Osoyoos Indian Band.
BCLC has rejected both local gambling proposals.
