Osoyoos astrophotographer Jack Newton shot this image with his guest Jordan Devenport on Sunday night during the lunar eclipse, which coincided with a supermoon. A supermoon is when a full moon is at its closest orbit from the earth, making the moon appear to be larger. Because the moon takes on a red hue when it is eclipsed, some people refer to it as a “blood moon,” and superstitions surround it. It was also a harvest moon, a full moon that occurs closest to the fall equinox. The occurrence of an eclipse and supermoon together is rare. The next time these phenomena occur together won’t be until 2033.
