A group of students at Southern Okanagan Secondary School is banding together to save endangered wildlife.
The Environmental Studies class run by Dan Fuller has adopted five endangered species through the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). These include the grey wolf, polar bear, bald eagle, grizzly bear and beaver.
Paying $50 gets you a certificate and a stuffed animal, which the students will leave behind as a legacy.
“I want to help endangered species of Canada,” said Grade 10 student Arshan Gill.
He admitted that he didn’t know how many endangered species there are in the world.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, there are 22,413 endangered species.
Gill said his favourite species is the bald eagle. “I like eagles in general. They are an empowering figure.”
Gill said he has never seen a beaver, but saw a grizzly bear while driving through Manning Park one time.
The Environmental Studies class recently held a fundraising campaign in the school’s atrium.
Grade 10 student Sumeet Sandhu said the class doesn’t want to see more species become endangered.
“We want to show that we actually do care about the world.”
