The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is reminding members of the public that wildfires are active worksites, and it is important to steer clear of them for your own safety, the safety of first responders and to avoid interfering with response efforts. When firefighting aircraft, such as airtankers or helicopters, are working on an active wildfire, the ground has to be clear for them to safely perform operational tasks.
When both personnel and aircraft are responding to a fire, radio communication is used to confirm personnel are a safe distance from the water or retardant drops.“Firefighting aircraft have to halt operations when the safety of responders and the public is at risk. To ensure safety and efficiency of wildfire operations, please avoid active wildfire areas.”
