If the Town wants to build a new dog pound in the Public Works yard, it will have to fall under a special zoning.

That’s what Chief Administrative Officer Heidi Frank advised. She noted that a dog pound is a kennel, which would not be a legal use at Public Works. A site-specific zoning would have to be established for the property, she pointed out.

The Town is looking at a couple of options for a dog pound. One is a six-stall cinderblock facility for $40,452, and the other is a wood frame facility for $32,000.

A chain link option is also being considered to prevent canine contact with the wood.

Town staff is recommending the cinderblock construction to lessen the upkeep and maintenance costs.

It was noted that the regional district may want to lease a part of the facility to house dogs picked up in the rural area.
