I would like to offer congratulations to Mr. Schulting at the Osoyoos Secondary School for organizing the senior girls soccer tournament last weekend and especially for the new format that was used.
It was a first and was called the provincial rural schools tournament.
It was a wonderful opportunity for 15 teams from the small schools of the province – Queen Charlottes, Fort St. James, Nakusp, Pemberton, to mention just a few.
Under the present system, called the Single A provincial finals, which takes place this coming weekend, there will be several teams competing from private schools located in several big centres (i.e. Kelowna, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Vancouver) who have huge numbers from surrounding areas from which they can choose players to form their teams and I don’t feel that they should be eligible to play at the Single A level.
I talked to several players and they all agreed that it certainly made for a much more level playing field and in most games there was just a difference of one goal.
I would like to see this format applied to basketball and volleyball as well as to soccer.
Congratulations also go to the host team, Osoyoos Girls, for taking first place.
