Small fire in prison cell

Small fire in prison cell

By Lyonel Doherty

Oliver firefighters responded to a smouldering fire inside a prison cell at Okanagan Correctional Centre this morning.

Fire department spokesman Rob Graham said six members were escorted inside the facility to a cell where some materials were smouldering.

“Once our crews arrived to the cell where the fire had been, they knocked down any still smouldering materials and removed them from the cell.”

The incident occurred at around 3 a.m.

“We had no issues inside and were escorted to and from cell blocks by corrections officers.”

Graham said each cell block is outfitted with standpipes, so the only equipment they required was some lengths of hose and a couple of fire extinguishers.

Firefighters were on scene for approximately 45 minutes.

Hope Latham, public affairs officer for the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, confirmed there was a small fire in one of the living units. She noted the cause is still being investigated.

“The small fire was contained and extinguished quickly and resulted in no injuries or evacuations.”
