Osoyoos's mayor has announced his intention to run for the B.C. Liberal party in the next provincial election in the spring of 2009.
John Slater said last week he will be seeking the Liberal nomination to be a candidate for the newly created constituency of Boundary-Similkameen, which includes the area south of Penticton from Christina Lake to Hedley.
The government recently increased the number of constituencies in the province from 79 to 85 to accommodate B.C.'s growing population.
These are exciting times for the province and I think I can add something to that, Slater said in a July 6 telephone interview.
Slater, who has sat on Osoyoos town council since 1990 and is currently in his second term as mayor, said he thinks his municipal political experience and knowledge of the area would be an asset at the provincial level.
Mayoral duties aside, Slater is also chair of the Okanagan Basin Water Board and the Hwy. 97 Border Coalition Society.
He serves on a number of regional committees including the Hwy. 97 Transportation Commission, the Hwy. 3 Corridor Task Force, the Southern Interior Local Government Association, the Interior Greenhouse Growers' Association, the B.C. Vegetable Marketing Commission and the board of directors for the Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen.
The Boundary-Similkameen Riding Association will hold its inaugural meeting at the Osoyoos Best Western on July 30, where members will elect the Liberal nominee.
Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes is also seeking the nomination.
Slater said no matter the outcome, he will definitely not be running for Osoyoos town council in the November municipal election.
I will not be seeking re-election for mayor, win, lose or draw at the provincial level, he said. I don't think its right. I'm putting everything into one effort.
Coun. Stu Wells announced earlier this year he is considering running for the mayor's seat in the Osoyoos municipal election this November.
On July 7, Wells said this is still a consideration.
