The Following are some highlights from the School District 53 Board of Education meeting held on March 10, 2026.
As March gets underway across School District 53, the month is already showing promise with new opportunities for students to share their talents, achievements, and connections within the Community, the Board said.
Positive culture
A major highlight was the outstanding production of Rock of Ages at Southern Okanagan Secondary School. Congratulations to the talented cast and crew, as well as the many staff members who supported students in bringing such an impressive performance to the stage. Opportunities in the arts continue to build confidence, creativity, and school pride.
We are also incredibly proud of the Senior Boys Basketball team from Similkameen Elementary Secondary School, which captured the BC Single A Boys Basketball Provincial Championship. Entering the tournament ranked tenth, the team defeated several higher-ranked opponents on their way to the title. With a young roster, there is strong excitement about the future of the program.
Health and wellbeing
Student well-being continues to be a priority across the district. More than 350 students participated in Winter Wellness activities on the land this season, encouraging healthy and active lifestyles. The five-week #changeyourmood initiative also engaged over 125 Grade 6 students in learning strategies that support mental health and positive habits.
Student achievement
Numeracy Screener Update – Collaboration among teachers remains strong. Grade 6 teachers recently met to share experiences using numeracy screeners, helping build consistency across schools and strengthen support for students who may need additional help.
Early learning
Early learning connections remain an important focus. Kindergarten teachers have completed Early Development Instrument surveys that will help identify support areas for young learners and families. The district is also preparing to launch an Outreach Van this spring to connect families with books, resources, and early learning opportunities throughout the region.
Career education
Career education continues to open pathways for students. Several are beginning new opportunities this spring in programs such as Health Care Assistant and Medical Office Assistant, while others are moving into Youth Train in Trades programs in welding, carpentry, and electrical. Our Skills Canada regional winners are now preparing for the provincial competition in April.
Supporting truth & reconciliation
Relationship building and cultural learning continue across the district. Community powwow fundraisers have brought people together, and preparations are underway for the upcoming Okanagan/Similkameen Days and the district’s annual powwow.
March is already shaping up to be a month filled with student achievement, collaboration, and strong community connections across SD53.
