Oliver LandfillTown council is supporting the plan to construct a ‘mega bag” recycling depot at the Oliver landfill.

The Town’s recent decision goes to the regional district for approval – a project with a shared cost of $23,600 with Area C (rural Oliver) over 15 years.

“Recycling has extended the life of the landfill for decades . . . we need to do something,” said Mayor Ron Hovanes.

Area C director Terry Schafer called the mega bag depot a win-win situation for everyone.

It was noted that T2 Market in Oliver will remain as a convenient recycling depot.

“The owner of T2 Market seems happy. I don’t think we’re stepping on any toes,” Schafer said.

The regional district’s Environment and Infrastructure Committee reviewed a report last fall regarding all landfill recycling depots in the district. Various options for the Oliver landfill were discussed.

It was recommended by the regional district that the Oliver site remain a contracted depot for Multi-Materials BC with mega bags to collect recycling.

The depot structure will include a roof and a paved area, which will help with ease of use, protection from the elements, and containment. It was noted the depot would require cardboard diverted to commercial “fibre” recycling bins.
