Dear Editor:
Thanks to the Osoyoos Times for the wonderful photograph taken at our recent Friends of the Library book sale.
Here is a report for your information on the people and the proceeds from this event.
The “Friends” want to thank the Town of Osoyoos and especially Mayor Sue McKortoff, councillor Carol Youngberg and Director of Community Services Greg Davis and his staff for their assistance in making the event a success.
The FOL annual book sale is a joint effort between the public (who generously donate all the books and DVDs, CDs that are sold); the librarians, a small core of Friends of the Library who meet three or four times a year to sort and categorize the donated materials and a dedicated group of friends and neighbours who volunteer for the event.
This year, there were six drivers and vehicles. 10 volunteers to set up tables, unload and display the books in 28 categories, sell the books, then repack and return the unsold materials to storage at the end of the sale. There were also five cashiers in two shifts with four additional helpers.
The result of all this volunteer activity was $1,392.25 raised for library enouncement, which was slightly more than 2014 and second highest amount since inception.
Over the past seven years, this dedicated group of volunteers has raised nearly $8,000 for the Osoyoos branch of the Okanagan Regional Library.
Funds have been used for a beautiful rug for the children’s’ story area; several sets of Lego for a new library program in 2015; a bookcase for ongoing sale of used books, a newspaper rack and a subscription to the weekend Globe and Mail national newspaper and a weekly Punjabi newspaper as well as paying for visits of touring authors, magicians and animators for children’s programs.
Thank you once again to everyone who assisted us and all the local residents who showed up to support our event.
We will be back again next year.
Vera and Michael Ryan
