If your dog is on the loose in rural Oliver or Osoyoos, be aware that another ‘K9” may try to catch it.
The regional district recently awarded a five-year dog control contract to K9 Control from Penticton. The $65,000 contract covers several rural areas including Oliver and Osoyoos.
The Town of Oliver has approved the construction of a dog pound in its Public Works yard, with a portion of it leased by the regional district.
Animal control service has been provided for the past 10 years by Marshall Enforcement Services.
The current service is operated out of Osoyoos and impoundments have historically been in the Town of Osoyoos animal shelter.
In 2014 the RDOS entered into a formal agreement with Osoyoos for temporary use of the shelter facility for Electoral Areas A, B, C, and G for a one-year period. This was renewed until June 2015.
In September of 2014, the RDOS sent out a request for submission of credentials from parties interested in providing animal control services to all or part of the RDOS. Five submissions were submitted and K9 Control was chosen.
The RDOS chose K9 Control for the following reasons: Company focus and experience on animal control; provision of an animal control officer with nine years of experience, who will reside in a central location of the region; web site, lost and found and adoption services; public education program; emphasis on dog licence sales; and operation of the service with minimal RDOS staff time requirements to oversee day-to-day activities.
