The public will soon have another say on a 46-unit affordable housing development on Airport Street.

Town council is expected to give second reading to the bylaw today and proceed to public hearing on Sept. 9.

Director of Development Services Randy Houle said the application seeks to amend the zoning of the property at 5931 Airport Road to allow for the construction of housing for families and seniors.

One amendment is to change the land use designation from Commercial Highway to High Density Residential.

Houle said M’akola Housing Society will be the eventual operators of the building while EllisDon Corporation will be the lead contractor.

Judging from recent consultation, the public appears to be very supportive of the project, Houle said, stating the need for affordable housing in the community.

Suggestions were made regarding incorporating a community garden on the unused (southeast) portion of the property.

Other suggestions include providing more suites for families (two and three bedrooms).

Council will review the proposal tonight at 7 p.m. during its regular meeting.
