Better to be safe than sorry when you’re dealing with Mother Nature, according to the regional district.

Officials are encouraging residents to prepare for flooding in case it happens this spring.

The RDOS says above-average snowpacks can lead to above-average spring runoff in the coming weeks.

“Now is the time to assess your property and buildings for potential drainage issues. Taking proactive measures before freshet begins can help prevent or minimize damage,” the RDOS says.

Emergency preparedness also includes establishing plans to ensure your family and pet’s needs are considered before flooding occurs.

Property owners in B.C. are responsible for taking the necessary steps to protect their own property from flooding.

The RDOS will provide sand and sandbags for property owners in addition to information about sandbag placement.

Sean Vaisler, manager of emergency services, said they plan to set up sandbag centres in rural Oliver and Osoyoos (if the need arises).

“They (these centres) will depend on the need and location of where we are seeing impacts,” he said.

To report flooding or depleted sand or sandbags call the Emergency Operation Centre at 250-490-4225.
