One person was sent to hospital and a dog perished following a pedestrian-involved collision on Highway 97 near Oliver on Thursday.
On Dec. 12 at approximately 5:15 p.m., police received a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a canine near Road 9.
Officers attended and located a woman suffering from injuries sustained from a collision with a GMC Terrain vehicle. A dog that was with her died.
The pedestrian was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with police. The circumstances continue to be investigated.
It was reported the woman was wearing all dark clothing on a very dark stretch of highway with no artificial lighting and wet roads.
Media relations officer Sgt. Jason Bayda said speed is not believed to be a factor and alcohol has been ruled out.
Bayda said the Oliver RCMP would like to remind both drivers and pedestrians about road safety.
“Pedestrians and drivers need to look out for each other and exercise caution especially during darker portions of the year.”
Bayda noted that pedestrians should dress to be seen. For example, they should wear light-coloured reflective clothing and carry a flashlight, he said.
The Oliver RCMP would like to speak to any persons who may have witnessed the collision or believe they observed the woman and dog walking on Highway 97 prior to the collision. They can call the Oliver RCMP at 250-498-3422.
