Dog lovers from across the South Okanagan – including several from Osoyoos – are expected to bring their pooches down to Penticton this coming Sunday for the annual Paws for a Cause fundraiser for the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
“We’ve been providing this important fundraising event for our organization at every one of our shelters across B.C. for the past several years, with the vast majority of them being held on the same day,” said Corinne Ross, the executive director of the South Okanagan SPCA branch based in Penticton.
Organizers of this year’s event have set a goal of raising $29,000, all of which remains in Penticton and goes towards programming and services in the South Okanagan, said Ross.
Those planning on participating in the walk are asked to raise pledges from family, friends, colleagues and co-workers and also encourage others to participate, said Ross.
Many dog lovers who can’t attend the event go out of their way to make a donation to the local SPCA to show their support, she said.
The Paws for a Cause event in Penticton traditionally attracts 150 participants and she is expecting that number on Sunday.
The funds raised help abused, injured, neglected and homeless animals throughout B.C.
This year, participants in 31 communities throughout the province will walk to raise funds to help animals in need across British Columbia.
The Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk to fight animal cruelty in Penticton will be held at Gyro Park. Registration will begin at 10:30 am with the walk starting at noon. Participants can enjoy a variety of entertainment and fun activities, including dog demos, kids’ corner, community vendors, demonstrations from Penticton firefighters, a barbecue, games and prizes for top fundraisers, said Ross.
The event brings animal lovers and their furry friends from all walks of life together for a great time as well as a fantastic cause.
“This is the largest single event to help fight animal cruelty in British Columbia,” says Krista Constantineau, manager of fundraising events at the BC SPCA. “We are overwhelmed by the amazing participation each year – it’s so great to see thousands of people come together across the province to help B.C.’s most vulnerable animals. Our supporters not only raise essential funds, the events are so much fun for two-legged and four-legged participants.”
