You win some, you lose some – and for the first time, the Osoyoos Coyotes have lost a game in regulation time.
The team won 4-1 against the Princeton Posse on Oct. 19 and won at home against the Kamloops Storm on Oct. 22.
But it was a memorable day for the team on Oct. 23 when they lost 3-0 to the Revelstoke Grizzlies.
“This game was definitely the most disappointing of the season for the Coyotes, whose scoring chances were limited, so much so that they weren’t able to pot a single goal,” states a media release from the team.
Osoyoos was unable to recover after allowing a short-handed goal late in the first period, which put the Grizzlies up 2-0 following 20 minutes of play.
A second period power play goal and a third period where Revelstoke played tight allowed the Grizzles to enjoy a 3-0 shutout.
Revelstoke outshot Osoyoos 41 to 22.
But the night before, the Coyotes came out strong against the Kamloops Storm – the former Osoyoos franchise — in front of a crowd of 435 people.
From the first moments of the game the Storm hammered away at the Coyotes and played a very physical game.
Penalties were the name of the game, with fans losing track of who was coming and going.
Osoyoos racked up a total of 55 penalty minutes including one fighting major, one 10-minute misconduct and one game misconduct.
The game misconduct was against Brock Anderson.
At the same time, Kamloops had 78 minutes of penalties including two fighting majors, two 10-minute misconducts and two game misconducts.
Osoyoos got a first-period power play goal from Shane Hanna.
Stefan Jensen was then able to find the back of the Kamloops net go give the pack a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
Kamloops cut the lead to one on a power play in the first five minutes of the second period.
But Jake Newton and Martine were able to pad Osoyoos’s lead with a goal apiece before the middle period ended.
The Coyotes kept the Storm at bay in the third period for a 4-1 victory.
Goaltender Kyle Laslo earned his ninth win of the season in net, stopping 29 of 30 shots and earning first star honours.
The Oct. 19 win in Princeton came with goals from Jensen, who scored a hat trick, and Taylor House.
Laslo turned aside 21 of 22 shots and the Coyotes outshot the Posse 40 to 22.
The Coyotes are still 13 points ahead of the Kelowna Chiefs atop the KIJHL’s Okanagan Division.
The team now has a record of 14-1-1-2.
Five of the Coyotes’ next six games will be played at the Sun Bowl Arena, including back-to-backers this weekend against the Penticton Lakers on Oct. 29 followed by a game against the Kelowna Chiefs on Oct. 30.
