The Town of Osoyoos is sending a letter of support for the regional district which is seeking grant funding to develop a compost site for organic waste at the Oliver Landfill.
The estimated $1.2 million project will compost residential food waste as well as agricultural and yard waste.
The grant the regional district is seeking from the Organic Infrastructure Program would cover up to two thirds of construction costs according to a letter from RDOS chair Karla Kozakevich.

“They’re not asking us to agree with it, they’re only asking us to support the application for a grant,” Mayor Sue McKortoff said at the June 3 regular council meeting.
The proposed facility would accept organic waste from Areas “A” and “C” along with Oliver, Osoyoos and the Osoyoos Indian Band.
“Right now, (organic waste) tends to go in the garbage which is probably not the best place for it. I understand it is something like 40 per cent of the food we prepare at restaurants and at home gets thrown out, which is a waste, a total waste,” McKortoff said.
Council unanimously voted to send a letter of support.
