Students to hold Terry Fox Run
Millions of students at schools across Canada will participate in the 25th annual Terry Fox Run, including both Osoyoos' high school and elementary school.
We felt strongly that this year, especially, it was important to participate in the Terry Fox Run and to raise awareness about what Terry Fox actually accomplished, said Osoyoos Secondary School P.E. teacher and event organizer Clint Dolgopol.
Dolgopol and the P.E. 11/12 class are helping to coordinate the event on the morning of Friday, September 16th.
Roughly 300 students will be participating in the run / walk, which will begin at approximately 9:15 a.m.
The whole story of Terry Fox is important and all that week we will be reading and showing clips in the school about what he achieved.
Most of us in the community have been touched by cancer in some way or know someone who has, Dolgopol added.
Students can take home pledge forms and raise money individually, but the school has also set up donation boxes at various locations around town, including Super Valu and Buy Low Foods.
Osoyoos Elementary School students will hold their Terry Fox Run on the afternoon of September 23rd.
Principal Farida Lubbers said the students have raised a lot of money for the Terry Fox Foundation in past years.
It's incredible the amount of money this school raises for the Terry Fox Run. The support from the community, the parents and students is tremendous, said Lubbers.
Lubbers added that students will be learning and talking about Terry Fox throughout the week leading up to the run. Donations of pennies on Monday, nickels on Tuesday, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on Thursday and loonies and toonies on Friday will also go to the Terry Fox Foundation.
Last year, students raised close to $3,000 and each year the goal is to surpass the previous year's amount.
All money donated to the Terry Fox Foundation through the runs and other activities goes toward cancer research.
