It’s a bit of a dream come true for Kavneer Dhaliwal to participate in the B.C. High School Boys Basketball Association’s annual all-star game.

The Grade 12 Osoyoos Secondary School student has been playing basketball since Grade 6. Now he’ll get to represent the Osoyoos Rattlers in Richmond and compete alongside and against the province’s best.

“I’m pumped,” Dhaliwal said. “I’ve been playing basketball since I was a little kid and I’ve always wanted to be good enough to do something like this.”

For coach Casey Brouwer who nominated Dhaliwal for the game, the choice was simple.

“Kavneer always gave 110 per cent,” he said. “He was the backbone of our team and at times carried us to victory.”

Brouwer said that Dhaliwal’s determination and endurance made it “an honour” to nominate him for the game.

“He never gave up, he never quit. He worked hard to motivate his teammates.”

Brouwer received the good news of Dhaliwal being selected for the game early Monday morning.

Dhaliwal said the call woke him up, but he didn’t mind.

“It was awesome.”

The anticipation of the big game has also come with a few nerves, but Dhaliwal said he’s feeling confident. Being “very competitive” is keeping him motivated and focused.

The 2018 All-Star Game takes place on Saturday, April 14 at RC Palmer Secondary School in Richmond.
