Every time he steps into his car, Blake Sewell is going to have a little chuckle and fondly remember his 26th birthday after a stunt pulled by his co-workers at the Buy-Low grocery store in Osoyoos.

Sewell, who has been working at the Osoyoos Buy-Low for more than 10 years, received a special birthday “present” when his co-workers wrapped his 2009 Pontiac G6 from top to bottom in cellophane palette wrap. They also covered the vehicle with a “Happy Birthday” ribbon.

“I will remember this for a long time,” said Sewell, who has been working at the local grocery store since he was first hired as a young high school student at Osoyoos Secondary School.

“All of the staff were apparently in on it. I didn’t have a clue. I walked into work at 6 a.m. and a few people wished me happy birthday. When I went outside for a break around 1 p.m., I couldn’t believe it. They had my car completely wrapped.

“They all thought it was really funny. I guess it was good for a laugh as I couldn’t help but laugh myself.”

Sewell said this kind of camaraderie and spirit is commonplace amongst the staff at the grocery store and it’s a big reason why he enjoys going to work.

“I love working here,” he said. “It’s a great place to work because we all get along and try and have some fun while we’re doing our jobs.”

Sewell bought his car four years ago and everybody he works with knows how proud he is of his vehicle, so he’s not surprised they chose to decorate his car as a special birthday surprise.

“That car is my pride and joy,” he said.

“You can’t get upset when people are trying to make your birthday memorable. It’s all good.”

Sewell does plan on coming up with a few surprises for some of his co-workers on their birthdays in the coming weeks and months.

“Pranks like this show the kind of spirit we have in this store,” he said. “It’s a fun place to work and we pull pranks on each other all the time, but they got me really good this time.”

Brian Fry, the manager of Buy-Low in Osoyoos, said he had nothing to do with the birthday surprise for Sewell, but he loved it.

“The staff decided they wanted to do something special, so someone came up with the idea of wrapping his car,” he said smiling. “I thought it was a great idea.

“Blake is a very good kid and he took it great, so we all had a good laugh and he had a birthday to remember.”

Fry agrees that there’s a real team spirit amongst the full-time employees at the store and pulling pranks and sharing laughs is a big part of the fun of going to work.
