— Provides “sense of arrival” for visitors to town —
(OSOYOOS TIMES — May 30, 2007) —
The final touches are being applied to the new Gateway Sign at the junction of Highways 3 and 97 and the project should be completed within the next two weeks, says Destination Osoyoos Executive Director Glenn Mandziuk.
Destination Osoyoos has overseen the project and hired Stone Forest Landscapes to complete the work. Last Friday, Mandziuk said he was waiting for the letters and the lighting to be finished.
The sign has been made from a concrete cinder block with bronze raised letters spelling 'Osoyoos'.
He says the finished project will look sharp. Benches and pathways will be interspersed with desert flowers and trees, and the sign will be illuminated from behind.
A book is always judged by its cover, and it's the same in Osoyoos. I think this sign will provide a good welcome mat and a real sense of arrival, he explains.
Mandziuk says he hopes in the long term to re-do the intersection, with landscaping at the new Visitor Centre @ Osoyoos to match the landscaping at the Gateway Sign.
Jim and Aaron Lester [of Stone Forest Landscaping] have gone the extra mile to do a great quality project that has exceeded our expectations, he adds.
Grants have helped to pay for the $75,000 project, with approximately $28,260 paid for by the Town.
