At the Osoyoos and District Arts Council annual general meeting on Sept. 25, the group started the evening by recognizing some local groups who uplift arts within our community.

“These community organizations, they engage in activities that strengthen the culture and identity of this community. So we have four $1,000 awards to give to each of these groups,” said Tracey Carnochan, president of the ODAC.

The following groups were awarded for their community engagement in Osoyoos relating specifically to supporting the arts and culture spirit.

Rotary Club of Osoyoos – “Rotary is working on a project to do with a mural within our community. And since it is an art installation, it’s definitely going to enhance how this community looks. We did want to be part of it but we just didn’t have the manpower, so we wanted to assist in making sure the development of it went through,” said Carnochan.

The Elks Lodge – “The Elks are a great partner with us in the fact that they allow us to meet here so we have lots of space. During our corporate phone calls, we’ve done a performance or two here as well, when we had a small hall and we couldn’t use the big theater. This year, there will be some dances and dinners and you’re going to see all parts of the community, not just one hall.”

Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre – “We’re hoping to support the Desert Centre through a program that they can develop that’s for the youth of the community. It’s going to really expand out into not only Osoyoos but it’s kind of a meeting of our two nations per se within our own little world here.”

Osoyoos District Museum & Archives – “The museum kind of encompasses everything to do with the cultural identity and the history of the community. We’re just in kind of conversations as to what we’re going to do but we’re really looking forward to the partnership with the new museum.”
