Osoyoos made a claim to fame early in 2009 after Jared Shawn David Stene was welcomed into the world as the first South Okanagan baby born this year.
Although there was a baby delivered at Penticton Regional Hospital on New Year's Eve, Jared's mother, Amanda Moreira was admitted to the hospital in labour on New Year's Day and she was the first woman on the maternity ward to give birth.
Other patients did come into the hospital in labour later in the day, but Amanda's mother, Susan Moreira, said her daughter was the first to deliver.
Jared was born at 12:41 a.m. on Jan. 2.
The nine-pound, two-ounce baby measured 56 centimetres long and was born to Amanda and her fiancé, Dave Stene, 13 hours after Amanda went into labour at 11:30 a.m. on her due date, Jan. 1.
Born healthy” although Susan said he was a bit jaundiced” Jared and his mom were expected to be released from the hospital some time on Jan. 5.
I was with her during the birth and it was pretty surreal to watch him take his first breath, Susan said on Jan. 5. It was awesome.
Amanda and Dave, who are both 24, are Osoyoos residents, as are both sets of grandparents.
This is the first baby of this generation for the Stene and Moreira families.
Amanda is an on-call teacher for School District 53 and Dave is a water operator for the Town of Osoyoos.
