Firehall BreweryOliver’s own Firehall Brewery is one of 10 semi-finalists in the Premier’s People’s Choice category in the 12th annual Small Business BC Awards.

“I feel honoured to have our efforts recognized,” said brew chief Sid Ruhland. “I will always have lots to learn in the world of business, but I appreciate the encouragement and must pass on the congratulations to all of Oliver.”

From October 1 to November 30, British Columbians were asked to nominate and vote for their favourite small businesses. This year was the biggest year yet for the competition, with over 460 nominations received from upwards of 70 communities across the province.

“They say it takes a community to raise a child, and Oliver has done not only that for me, but has also helped raise my family’s business venture, so we can all give ourselves a pat on the back for putting Oliver on the craft beer map,” Ruhland said.

He noted that local consumer loyalty must be earned, so “we will continue to strive to meet the beer needs of our hometown.”

Nominated companies were given two months to gain as many votes as possible through word-of-mouth and social media.

These small businesses will now move forward to face a panel of judges, who will review their applications, and based on the award criteria, narrow down the competition to the top five finalists in each category. The top five finalists will be announced on January 30, 2015, and invited to give a Dragons Den-style pitch in front of a panel of judges on why they should be named the best in BC.

The winners will be honored and celebrated on February 26, 2015 at a special ceremony in Vancouver.

Another local semi-finalist is chartered accountant Jane Long from Osoyoos and Oliver. She is competing in the “best emerging entrepreneur” category.
