The Town of Oliver is bringing a “rainbow” crosswalk to the community.

This week council unanimously approved establishing a multi-coloured crosswalk near Southern Okanagan Secondary School on Fairview Road. It will cross Fairview Road in front of Frank Venables Theatre.

The rainbow crosswalk idea supports the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning) community.

Councillor Petra Veintimilla said the crosswalk will be a “symbol of inclusion.”

Councillor Jack Bennest agreed, saying it will represent the concept of “acceptance.”

Councillor Larry Schwartzenberger said he spoke to Principal Marcus Toneatto who expressed his interest in the crosswalk, agreeing with the inclusion and anti-bullying message.

Director of Operations Shawn Goodsell estimated the cost to be $400 to $600. The project could get underway in April or early May depending on the weather.
