The Rotary Club of Oliver has honoured Southern Okanagan Secondary School’s (SOSS) Emmet Fernandes as its “Student of the Month” for October.
The initiative started earlier this year by the Rotary Club aims to recognize one student each month who exhibits leadership and positive change in the school and the community. The Student of the Month is chosen according to the following criteria: The students are to be in grade 10 and exemplify service over self, whether in the school community or the greater community.
Here’s what the panel had to say: “Emmet Fernandes is a kind and energetic individual who is always willing to help others. His personality fills a room with positive energy and enthusiasm.
“He shares his talents through his work on stage with the school musicals and volunteering as an instructor as he works toward becoming a lifeguard at the Oliver Pool.
“His service work shines at the Oliver Alliance Church where he volunteers his time to help with the Youth Programs. Emmet is also involved with the afterschool program at Tuc el Nuit through Oliver Parks and Recreation.
“Around our school, Emmet quietly helps others without being asked and without any hesitation.”
