It takes a whole community to raise a child, and the same goes for preventing crime, according to the mayor of Oliver.

Ron Hovanes said he met with Oliver RCMP commander Sgt. Ken Harrington to discuss the recent “rash of crime” that occurred in the community.

“The police are working as hard as they can with the resources they have,” the mayor told council.

Hovanes made it clear that the police are not here to provide personal security for people’s belongings, noting that residents have to look after their own possessions.

“Lock your doors. Some people have nothing better to do than check your door handles,” the mayor pointed out.

There have been a rash of break-ins in Oliver, and police continue to remind residents to ensure that their vehicles are locked and their valuables are out of sight.
