Royal Canadian Legion members in Oliver feel like they’ve lost a member of the family in the recent passing of their president, Sharon Dagenais.
“As a president and a member, she was there for anyone who needed anything. I will miss her as a mentor,” said new president Marty Foss.
He pointed out that Sharon made a significant contribution to the Oliver community and to the legion.
“Not many had her knowledge and drive.”
Legion secretary Kate Krist said she enjoyed Sharon’s dry sense of humour and noted that she never missed a beat.
“I admired her for her working knowledge of the Royal Canadian Legion, her ability to handle many different personalities, and her guidance and patience with new executive members.”
Krist said Sharon was a strong supporter of veteran’s and children’s issues in Oliver and dedicated her life to the legion and everything it stands for.
Longtime legion member Chris Yerburgh said it is extremely difficult losing a serving president in any situation.
“Sharon, with her previous experience in the legion, was able to carry on with very little assistance. I believe she had confidence in her executive, therefore she was able to fulfill her role with little difficulty.”
Tara Hovanes, the legion’s entertainment chairperson, said Sharon was seriously dedicated to veterans and remembrance while quietly going about her duties.
“Sharon put in hours and hours of work that many people didn’t know about; someone who worked behind the scenes with little or no recognition. This lady was a true example of what a volunteer is.”
For Sharon, the legion was her home away from home, and for many, her presence will be felt every time they step through that door.
Members hosted a celebration of life for Sharon on December 6.
