Girls gearing up for valley contest soon

Field hockey is in full swing at SOSS now that school is back in session and students have settled in.

There is a large squad of 27 girls comprised of athletes fairly new to the sport, very experienced grade 12 players, and everything in between.

The girls are committed and have positive attitudes, so the season will surely be fun, but if they want to compete strongly the girls will need to work hard on their fitness and increase their tenacity on the field.

The SOSS Fall Festival, our home tournament, took place on the SOSS field on September 27-28 and hosted six visiting teams.

Last week SOSS travelled to Chilliwack, winning three games, losing two and tieing one.

In the coming weeks, league games against Penticton, Summerland and Kelowna schools and a trip to play Kootenay teams in Castlegar will give SOSS girls a chance to practice their skills and strategy before the Valley Championships on October 25 and the Provincial Championships on November 6-8.

SOSS already has a berth in the provincials because Oliver is hosting the championships this year.

This will be the first time in over a decade that the provincials will be held on good, old-fashioned grass instead of an artificial surface.

Be sure to show your support on the field, and be sure to make some noise in November.
