An Oliver girl is taking her 4H Club experience to the max – over 1,600 pounds (725 kg) worth.
Selena Vala, a member of the Boundary “C” 4H Club in Rock Creek, has put many hours into raising her steer “Scooby” for show and market. You can see Scooby at the Rock Creek fall fair this weekend (September 17-18).
Vala will also be showing her steer at the BC Agricultural Expo in Barriere on Sept. 23-26.
This is Vala’s first year raising her Angus X Charolais steer in the 4H beef club, which she calls “incredibly fun.”
She bought Scooby at 640 pounds from Kerri and Ken Hinsburg. Now he weighs more than 1,600 pounds.
“Scooby has taught me so much this year. I learned how to groom him, feed him, take care of his daily needs, and teach him how to show in the show ring,” Vala said.
“He has been raised on local feed and grain; my secret ingredient was black oil sunflower seeds to give him a beautiful coat with excellent marbling.”
This project has been like a full-time job for Vala, who has learned a great deal about the agriculture industry.
If you are looking for top quality AAA beef, you can bid on her steer at the BC AG Expo through the live auction and online sale at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
People can pre-register for the bid at www.dlms.ca.
