The Oliver Fire Department is receiving $30,000 for a new fire hydrant and burn building addition on its training grounds.

Oliver is one of 110 fire departments getting a portion of $6.3 million in funding from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness to bolster firefighter response.

Oliver Fire Chief Bob Graham said this funding will go towards installing a waterline from the existing hydrant to a new one closer to the southern side of their training grounds. It will also fund a new container building which will be used in training for structure firefighting and building searches.

“We are looking forward to this expansion to help with training not only for our department but also some of the neighbouring departments as well,” Graham said.

Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma said these 110 fire departments have  different challenges than most fire departments, and this funding will go a long way by supporting them to purchase new or replacement equipment and deliver training.
