The topics of tiny homes and disaster response are two resolutions that the Town of Oliver is submitting to this year’s SILGA convention.

Last week council approved the ideas by Coun. Aimee Grice.

Each year council considers sending resolutions to the Southern Interior Local Government Association for action.

Last year’s resolutions included primary care network funding, COVID-19 safety in long-term care homes, landlord protection, and extreme weather shelters.

Grice suggested revisions to Oliver’s building code to allow tiny homes in the community. She also promoted communication with the provincial and federal government with municipalities regarding disaster response.

She told the Times-Chronicle that affordable housing is her passion and she wants to explore if tiny homes are a viable option for Oliver.

Grice noted she wants to remove any possible limitations in the building code to allow this type of construction while keeping safety at the forefront.

“Housing is becoming incredibly unaffordable so any increase to the affordable housing supply would be welcome in my opinion.”

As for the emergency management resolution, Grice said there are regional board members who are concerned with how funding and resources are coordinated and distributed after an emergency.
