The Town of Oliver is starting off June by acknowledging the more sage members of the community, and their efforts to build a strong community culture.
A proclamation was approved by Council last week, declaring the week of June 1 to 7 to be “Senior’s Week” in Oliver. The request for the proclamation was brought forward on behalf of the Oliver Seniors Centre Society.
Brieanne Mader, the Deputy Corporate Officer, stated that Senior’s Week recognizes and lauds “the valuable contributions that seniors make to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of Oliver.”
Mader noted at the Council meeting that planning was underway for activities that would take place throughout the week within the community. The benefits of community engagement and celebration were emphasized, as well as working with the Oliver Seniors Centre Society.
Seniors’ Week has been recognized by the Town of Oliver before. In 2025, Seniors’ Week fell on the same June 1 to 7 span that the 2026 edition will; albeit running from Sunday to Saturday instead of this year’s Monday to Sunday. In 2024, Seniors’ Week was recognized from June 2 to 8, also following the “week” structure that 2025 adhered to.
This year’s Seniors’ Week will still feature a pancake breakfast and bake sale on Sunday, May 31, with a full schedule of events taking place for the full week afterward. A free chair yoga class as well as a ladies-only disc golf event are featured on June 2, along with a free weight room orientation, and outdoor walking and bench-stretch activities on June 3. The Oliver Fire Department will also be hosting a Fire Smart Q&A on June 3.
A highlight of both June 5 and 6 will be Bingo rounds, with celebratory cake offered on June 5 and a dinner being part of the June 6 “wind-up” event. A free AquaFit class on that Friday concludes the fitness activities portion of the itinerary, and the week will be capped off with a Walk and Talk event with Mayor Martin Johansen on June 7.
