Wilhelmina (Mies) Margaretha Willems (nee Bergman)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Wife, Mother, Oma, and Omi from complications due to Covid, with her family by her side.
Predeceased by her first husband Tjaart Imbos (1970), son Hans Imbos (2003) and brothers Hans and Rudy of the Netherlands.
Mom will be sadly missed by her loving husband Tony of 45 years. Son Tjaart (Judy) of Calgary, Marigje (Brent) Toepfer, grandsons Mike and Lindsay (Chantal), and great granddaughter Sloane all from Osoyoos.
Also, many friends and relatives from the Netherlands.
Mom was born in Utrecht to Samuel and Marigje Bergman (Versluis). She was the eldest of 4 children. Her father was an engineer in the Dutch Navy and in 1935 the family moved to Surabaya, Indonesia. Then the war broke out and from the age of 18 until 21 Mom along with her mother and brothers were held captive in a Japanese Concentration Camp. Her father was held in an all-men’s camp. They endured many hardships and were fortunate to have survived. Not long after the war ended the family returned to the Netherlands. She met Tjaart and they were married in 1949.
After the birth of 3 children Mom convinced her husband Tjaart to immigrate to Canada for more opportunities. So, in 1966 the family sailed on the SS Ryndam to Montreal. From there they took the train to Vancouver. Life was not easy as they had to learn the language and the Canadian way of life. Sadly after 4 years Tjaart passed away. In 1973 Mom moved the family to Osoyoos where she met Tony and they were married in 1977.
Mom and Tony had many adventures traveling with their trailer through Canada and America. When the relatives visited from the Netherlands, they would pick them up in Calgary and show them the sites touring back to Osoyoos.
She enjoyed bus trips to casinos and cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean.
Her grandsons and great granddaughter were her pride and joy, spoiling them whenever she got the chance. She had many hobbies and her hands were always busy knitting and sewing. Playing the lottery and Bingo were her other passions. She was always winning something. Mom was also a wonderful cook. Her specialties were Dutch and Indonesian cuisine.
Mom worked as a Nurse’s Aide, Housekeeper and on the Sorting Line at the Packing House in Osoyoos and Oliver.
She enjoyed volunteering and was a member of the Women’s Institute, Royal Purple, Sagebrush Lodge and Mariposa Ladies Auxiliary.
Mom was a hard worker, a brave, loving and giving person. She always had a positive outlook on life and an upbeat attitude no matter the situation.
Thank you, Tony, for the love and care you gave to Mom.
Thank you to the nurses, doctors at the Oliver Hospital and McKinney Place for their wonderful care.
Mom you will always be in our hearts. We miss you so much.
