Shirley Buhler

August 15, 1926 -
May 25, 2022

With heavy hearts, but also with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection, the family of Shirley Buhler announces that she passed to her rest on May 25, 2022.  Shirley was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1926 to Emanuel and Anna Eckman, and was the baby sister of her older brother, Edgar.  In 1950 while studying nursing at a college in California she met, and later married, Vance Buhler, another Canadian who was then living in California.  After returning to Canada, they had four sons (Rick, Brent, Mark, and Kevin), all born within a period of less than four years.  During their first twenty-five years of marriage Shirley and Vance lived in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, mostly in the greater Vancouver area.  In 1976 they relocated to the island of St. Vincent in the West Indies, where Vance continued his boat-building and design business, and they lived the tropical island life for the next 20 years.  In 1996 they sold the business and selected Osoyoos, B.C. as their retirement destination.

Shirley, a life-long Seventh-day Adventist, was an active member of the Osoyoos Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she developed many dear friendships.  Shirley and Vance were both music lovers, and sang in several church and community choirs in Osoyoos for holiday programs.  They were active members of the Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Vance, on December 31, 2011.  She is survived by her four sons: Rick Buhler (Ethel) of South Hazelton, B.C.; Brent Buhler (Leslie) of Hoodsport, Washington; Mark Buhler (Arlene) of Altamonte Springs, Florida; and Kevin Buhler of Richmond, B.C.  She is also survived by three lovely granddaughters, Meresa Buhler (and her mother Cynthia Buhler) of Seattle, Washington, Sierra Huber (Josh), of Prince George, B.C., and Emily Kavanagh (Christopher), of Fort Collins, Colorado, and one delightful great-granddaughter, Anna Joy Kavanagh.

The family is planning a memorial service for Shirley at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Osoyoos Seventh-day Adventist Church, 10109 – 62nd Ave, Osoyoos, British Columbia.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Shirley’s

honour to a charity of your choice.
