It is with heavy hearts that the family of Maria Avila announce her passing on December 16, 2021 at the age 89 years.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Elvino Ferreira Avila; infant son; father, Manuel Inacio Silva; mother, Maria De Carmo Pires; brother, Antonio Fernando Silva; sister, Georgina Jesus Machado.

Maria will be fondly remembered by her loving family; son. Jorge (Manuela); daughter, Zelia (Jose); son, Al (Tiara); son, Paul (Nicole); son, Roy (Jillian); brother, Manuel (Maria); 10 grandchildren, Jessica, Steven, Jeffrey, Jeremy, Ellissa, Megan, Jordan, Samuel, Madison, Benjamin; as well as 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in Canada and back in the Azores.

In 1973, Maria and her husband moved the family to Canada and settled in Oliver.  In 1977, they bought the family orchard where she lived until her passing. Maria travelled back to Terceira, Azores a few times to visit family and friends.

Maria’s family was her pride and joy.  She raised 5 children and helped with the grandchildren.  She loved family gathering and holidays. She was always very excited to see her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, baking, helping out in the orchard, flower gardens, picking vegetables from the garden, and going to Church on Sundays.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father Thomas Kakkaniyil officiating. Interment will follow at the Oliver Cemetery.
