Maldwyn (Big Mal) Turner
Mal Turner, late of Osoyoos, passed away at home on February 17, 2022 at the age of 83 years. The son of a Scottish mum and a Welsh father, who immigrated during the Depression, Mal was born in Calgary, AB, on December 14, 1938.
He will forever be remembered by his loving wife, Margaret-Anne, and son, Mal Jr.
Mal achieved his Bachelor of Science in Recreation from Brigham Young University in 1965. During his years at BYU, he also played minor pro hockey for the Salt Lake City Seagulls. After university Mal worked for the City of Calgary as a Rec Director in the 1970s. He then decided to move to BC and purchased Cabana Beach Campground in Osoyoos where he was the Owner/Operator throughout the 80s into the 90s. Most people in the S. Okanagan though, would know him from his later years working at the Sun Bowl Arena, running his skate sharpening and wee hockey shop. He enjoyed being part of his community helping coach minor hockey and dressing up as Santa for the kids every Christmas. He even had the real tummy and beard to boot!
For the last few decades of his life, Mal’s favorite thing to do was follow his son around the world as he globetrotted. From Finland in the 90s, to Australia and South East Asia, and every Christmas to Taipei, Taiwan for over 15 years. Along with hockey and traveling He also liked to be with his dogs. They too will miss him.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm, Sunday March 27, 2022 at the Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery followed by a celebration of life reception at 3:00 pm, Sunday March 27, 2022 at the Osoyoos Sunbowl Arena mezzanine.
In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted to South Okanagan Minor Hockey of the SPCA.
