
Jean Charles Michel d’Irumberry (Mike) de Salaberry
On Monday, January 24, 2022, Mr. Jean Charles Michel d’Irumberry (Mike) de Salaberry, age 90 years of Osoyoos, passed away peacefully of Mesothelioma in the arms of his beloved wife Margaret.
Predeceased by his parents, his son Paul, his brother Louis and his sister Yvonne.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, his children by a previous marriage: Michelle (Tom Black), Denise (Clifford Sheaves), Collette (Wil Seders) and Danica (Ron Robertson), and step-son Patrick Belanger. Mike leaves behind ten grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Mike spent twenty-five years in the Royal Canadian Navy/Canadian Forces, seven years in the Cadet Instructor Cadre, and was a Deputy Sheriff for over ten years, working mostly in the Jury Management section of British Columbia Supreme Court.
A life member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Mike served at Branch executive level as well as council in both the New Westminster and South Okanagan/Similkameen Zones. He was a member of the Aldergrove Chief and Petty Officers Association, the Penticton Naval Veterans Association and the Osoyoos Senior Centre Association. Mike was Santa Claus for many children for more than thirty years.
Mike was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. He was also named Osoyoos Volunteer of the year in 2013.
Mike enjoyed travelling, mostly across Canada and some trips into the United States. His hobbies included building things, working with music as a disc jockey and compiler of CD’s, also as a sound technician, installing and servicing sound equipment in churches, Legion Branches and at the Osoyoos Seniors’ Centre. He cycled in his early years, did track and field in the Navy, and steered a Dragon Boat in Osoyoos.
Thank you to the wonderful Doctors (Drs. Biagioni, Walker and Broder) and Nurses at Penticton Regional Hospital, as well as the Doctors and Nurses at the South Okanagan General Hospital, for the outstanding care which Mike received during his recent illness. A special heartfelt “Thank You” goes out to Dr. Robert Calder, and to Nurse Sara, who were exceptionally kind in assisting Mike to pass away in peace with the dignity he deserved!!
