Iris Tweedy

Iris G. Tweedy passed away peacefully at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos on October 22, 2023, at the age of 100.  Iris is survived by her beloved daughters Rhonda Tweedy Rohatynchuk (Ken Hnatiuk), and Bonnie Douglas (Greg); Adored grandchildren Cameron (Erin), Jen (John), Haley (Justin), Scott, Monica (Eric), and Brent (Katrina) as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

Iris was predeceased by her husband of 66 years Glenn; son Bobby (1957); daughter Donna; her sisters Dorothy, Marjorie and Barbie; grandson Cody; and dearest friend Jean Vantreight of Victoria.

Iris was born in Victoria BC to Reginald and Charlotte Pembridge and resided there during her childhood.  In June 1941 she moved to Vancouver to work as a federal civil servant for the Department of National Defence and then to Jericho Beach with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps which she joined in 1942. Iris received her Corporal and then Sergeant stripes.  Prior to heading overseas for duty during WWII Iris met the love of her life, Glenn Tweedy.  Following her return to Canada Glenn and Iris married on October 10, 1946, in Vancouver and drove to Osoyoos where they built their home and lived out their lives together.

Iris was well known in Osoyoos as an active community member and Customs Officer with the Canadian Border Service Agency.  Iris belonged to sports clubs such as the Badminton Club, Ladies Soft Ball (Tweedy Bros and Sand ball team), International Curling Club, Osoyoos Golf and Country Club, Osoyoos Lawn Bowling, Senior’s Swimming Club, as well as many card groups over the years as she loved playing bridge among other card games.  Iris belonged to the United Church Junior Circle, was a Charter member of the Gyrette Club, a Charter member of the Order of the Royal Purple, the Senior Citizens Club #54 and a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion #173 and was honoured to receive an Honorary Secretary’s medal.

The family would like to thank Dr. Calder for the decades of care provided to Iris and the staff at Mariposa for the love she received during the last years of her wonderful life.  Iris will be missed by all who were blessed to know her including her nieces and nephews, God-daughter and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Osoyoos United Church on November 13 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a graveside committal at the Osoyoos Lakeview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion #173 Poppy Fund.
