Hilda was born on the family farm near Dysart Sask. and grew up in the Frenchman Butte area near Lloydminster. In 1946 she came to BC, working in packinghouses, canneries and restaurants. She met Eden in Penticton and they were married there in 1947. They built their first homes and their family together in Beaverdell, before moving to Osoyoos in 1965. In Osoyoos, Hilda expanded her role of wife, mother and homemaker to include work at the Osoyoos Coop Growers Packinghouse, as well as community service work with the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Osoyoos United Church and it’s Ladies groups.
Four years after the death of Eden, her husband of 40 years, Hilda married their long time friend, Vern who had also been widowed. Hilda and Vern spent the next 14 years gardening, camping and exploring BC, Alberta, the Yukon and North West Territories together They also made memorable trips to Churchill, Mb. to see the polar bears and to the Maritimes to experience the fall colours. Trips to New Zealand, Costa Rica, and several Caribbean cruises were also travel highlights for Hilda and Vern. During her lifetime, Hilda also loved her family trips to Norway, Hawaii and Mexico, as well as to the Mid-west and Southern USA with her sisters. When she wasn’t travelling or working in the garden, Hilda was often seen out walking or could be found watching a variety of winter sports on TV. The NHL and the Junior Hockey Championships were her favourites. She also loved playing, and usually beating her family and friends in rounds of cribbage, and other card games.
Hilda enjoyed making and sharing meals and afternoon tea with her family and friends. A few of her specialties were her fresh bread, soups, sweets, jams and pickles. Special occasions will not be the same without her devilled eggs, lemon meringue pie and butter tarts. A farm girl at heart, Hilda loved spending time in the garden, tending both veggies and flowers. After she moved into the condominium, Hilda kept her green thumb exercised by helping to care for the gardens at the Osoyoos United Church, where she also volunteered in the Thrift Shop.
Hilda lived a long, full and active life. She was always cheerful, kind, accepting and loving. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A private Family service for Hilda will be held in October, followed by internment in the Osoyoos Cemetery. A public Celebration of Life will be held when Covid restrictions allow.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or B.C. Children’s Hospital, or a Charity of your choice.
