Guenter August WAGNER
In the early morning hours on Friday December 18, 2020 Mr. Guenter August Wagner of Osoyoos passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 86.
Opa as he was so affectionately called was born January 18, 1934 in Cologne, Germany. At the young age of five years old, he and his older brother became orphans. His mother passed away and his father was enlisted with the army. Much of his childhood was spent in the Foster Care of the Catholic Nuns during WW11.
After the war ended, he apprenticed and received his Journeyman Papers in Carpentry.
He was also an active Swim Instructor and accomplished Lifeguard. He taught young children to seniors how to swim and stay safe in the water. He regularly swam the Rhine River in Germany and received several commendations for rescuing and saving the lives of seven people.
In 1957 Gunter immigrated to Canada and arrived in Vancouver, BC. Here he met a young lady by the name of Edith Streck. Things went well and on September 26, 1959 they wed. They had three children, Claus Wagner, Michael Wagner (Verna Wagner) and Monica Fitzl (Willy Fitzl). He was also the Grandfather to three Grand Children, Theo and Brock Wagner and Tobin Fitzl.
Gunter was extensively involved in the Construction Industry after he arrived in Canada and was so proud after becoming a Canadian Citizen.
He spent much of his time with family and friends enjoying the Great Outdoors whether it was camping, hiking, skiing, hunting, fishing, whatever Outdoors or just enjoying the scenery that British Columbia has to offer.
Gunter and Edith also enjoyed the last thirty years of their retirement Snowbirding in Yuma, Arizona.
Gunter was such a caring and giving person and the Wagner and Fitzl Families from the bottom of our hearts would like to thank all the wonderful nurses at McKinney Place. Caringly devoted their time and energy in keeping our loving Husband, Father and Grandfather comfortable especially during the last days.
A special Thank You to nurse Carmen who was with Gunter when he took his final breath as we could not be there for him when he needed us the most. We really know how hard that must have been for you.
