George Herbert (Herb) Moore passed away on October 7, 2021, in Oliver BC.

Predeceased by parents George Moore and Alice Moore, Brother Earl, Sisters Violet, Ivy, Rose, and Pat.

Survived by the love of his life, his wife of 68 years Betty Moore (Thiessen), his children Brent Moore (Joan), Sharon Moore, and Greg Moore, his grandchildren Laurel, Heather, Danielle, Alison, Lindsey, and Katie, and his great-grandchildren Alexis, Reece, Hailey, and Rylan.

Herb was a man of many talents and varied careers. An avid outdoorsman who demonstrated this by taking his new bride Betty on a “roughing it” camping trip for their honeymoon in 1953, followed by many years of camping with the family every summer. He prided himself on being the first person awake to build the daily fire and put on the coffee. Herb was a major player in the car racing scene at Westwood Motorsport Park in the late 50’s and 60’s, having his own sports car shop where he designed and built custom vehicles. A talented mechanic, his work was sought after by many racing enthusiasts. His career in the automobile industry included roles as Service Manager, Sales Manager, and General Manager for car dealerships, as well as working for the head offices of both Volvo and Nissan, where he travelled to many countries representing these firms. In 1975 Herb started a company to convert import trucks and vans to 4 wheel drive vehicles. During this time, he also designed and built a 5th wheel camping trailer with a customized towing van, that was the object of great interest and excitement everywhere he went. Herb could design and build anything, and he always amazed people with his creativity. He loved horses and dreamed of returning to life in the country, and in the late 70’s he convinced his very patient city girl wife Betty to sell their home in Tsawwassen and retire to the Cariboo. They bought acreage overlooking the scenic Walker Valley near 100 Mile House and designed and built from scratch a log home and all of the outbuildings. He returned to his roots from birth when he bought a horse – Nugget – and the two of them participated in cattle roundups for local ranches, and cattle penning competitions. He began writing Cowboy Poetry, which he performed to great acclaim all over BC and Alberta, and his work was published in several respected magazines and newspapers. He was an entertainer who loved to sing and recite his often-humorous poems to appreciative audiences. He was a “trail boss” who organized rides throughout the Cariboo and parts of Alberta, where people rode and camped out with their horses for many days. He drove a team of draft horses in the 108 Mile area where he took people on covered wagon rides in the summertime and sleigh rides in the winter, singing and whistling the whole time. Wherever he went he was sure to entertain with his old cowboy songs and poems. In his spare time, he also managed Tasco Supplies in 100 Mile House and was also an active member of the 108 Volunteer Fire Department. In 1996, Herb and Betty sold their acreage and made a memorable trip across Canada, before retiring in Oliver at their home next to Tucelnuit Lake. Herb was well-known in their neighbourhood for being the first to offer a helping hand to anyone in need. It was there he also began one of his last careers, that of a writer. He wrote 3 manuscripts which he was encouraged to publish but never did. He joined a writer’s group as well as a local choir where he could share his passion for song. Herb was unfailingly positive and was still making jokes right up to the end. His family will forever miss his whistling and singing around the house, his wonderful stories, and the evidence of his great love for Betty as he sang to her every day and held her hand while they fell asleep each night. You are a hard act to follow Herb and will live on in the hearts of all of us who loved you so much. We envision you riding the ranges with Nugget and enjoying a well-deserved rum and coke in the evenings.

A celebration of life is planned for 3:00 pm, November 27, 2021, at the Oliver United Church, in Oliver BC. A small reception with refreshments will be offered. We ask all those who plan to attend to ensure that they are fully vaccinated, as we will be checking vaccine passports. As Herb was a passionate animal lover, in lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to the SPCA be made in his name.
