The Nighthawk fire off Highway 3 west of Osoyoos is now classified as held.

“We anticipate it to be under control by the end of the day,” said Kyla Fraser, communication specialist from the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The brush fire started at approximately 1 p.m. on Tuesday, not far from the Nighthawk Road junction.

Fraser said the fire has grown to 1.4 hectares since yesterday. Six wildfire crew members are currently on site.

She noted that no structures have been threatened and there is no impact on highway traffic.

While the cause is still under investigation, fire officials suspect it was human caused.

When asked about the problem of cigarettes being thrown out of vehicles, Fraser said it depends on the conditions whether that will start a fire.

Regardless, officials encourage people not to discard their cigarette butts in a way that could result in a wildfire. Even when you think the risk might be low, don’t do it.
