Students returning to Oliver Elementary School this fall will see a new face in the principal’s office.

Barton Tumlinson replaces former principal Mike Safek, who has transferred to Osoyoos Secondary School. Tumlinson comes from Similkameen Elementary Secondary School, where he served as vice principal.

He has been an administrator for nine years, and has taught science and math as a classroom teacher. He has also coached multiple sports teams.

Tumlinson chose this career because he always enjoyed school as a student.

“I find the school environment exciting and fulfilling,” he said.

The philosophy he would like to bring to his new position is that OES needs to continue to be a place of high standards and offer social stimulation for students. School also has to be fun, he pointed out.

When asked what his stance on bullying is, Tumlinson had this to say: “I have zero tolerance for bullying or harassment. Students need to feel comfortable about reporting bullying – which is the environment we will continue to promote at OES.”

Tumlinson said his goal is to uphold the safe and fun learning environment at OES. He noted that current staff demonstrate a fun and academically rigorous environment, and will continue that effort.

When asked about any changes in the school this fall, Tumlinson said they will be implementing “inquiry time” once a month starting in September.

“We are excited to see the positive changes we can bring about for students.”

Inquiry time will see students released about 90 minutes early once a month so that teachers and administrators can collaborate to improve learning outcomes in students.
