“Odd for sure.”

Those were the words of one captain of the Oliver Fire Department that responded to a mattress fire on Wednesday.

Someone called 911 regarding a fire near the corner of Main Street and Veterans Avenue on July 27.

“It was unclear what we were actually responding to until an officer on scene indicated a mattress on fire,” said Captain Rob Graham.

The mattress may have been located on the new Dairy Queen construction site.

“We do not know where the mattress came from, though someone from the construction crew did say it had been there possibly for a few days.”

Graham said there was no evidence to suggest how it started.

“It did catch some grass of the neighbouring property on fire, and a construction worker was able to find a garden hose to extinguish it.”

Graham said the flames scorched some climbing vine/plants on the side of a nearby home, but fortunately it was knocked down before it could ignite the structure.

“We do not know at this time if it was a random incident or deliberate,” Graham said.
