Dear Editor:

This is an open letter to B.C. Premier Christy Clark and the provincial liberal government regarding recent events pertaining to the potential establishment of a national park reserve in the South Okanagan-Similkameen region of our beautiful province.

I thank you, Miss Clark, and your strong Liberal team for strengthening our democracy here in the South Okanagan.

People here are pleasantly surprised that negotiations are about to be re-started with Parks Canada to develop a workable plan for our new national park in spite of our local, first term MLA’s objection. Linda Larson has stated that she would rather have one rancher than four tourists in our region.

This is an arid region and it takes over 1,800 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef, which is totally unsustainable, in my opinion, with global warming.

The plan presented is a start, but is far from a workable business plan.

In my opinion, the three designated areas being considered for a national park by the provincial Liberals need to be joined together into one recognizable national park that provides easy identity and access to locals and tourists from around the world.

Protection is needed for this sensitive region for species at risk and protection from the destruction from ATVs and hunting.

Investment in this area by Parks Canada will bring needed employment, infrastructure, global recognition and protection only offered by Parks Canada.

Another major benefit is that Parks Canada will pay for all firefighting costs in an area that, as everyone knows, suffered immense damage due to the raging wildfires that covered much of the area in August and early September.

I am trying to help make Canada, and more specifically the South Okanagan, a better place for generations to come.

Thank you for allowing me to write about this very important issue.

Bob Parker

Osoyoos, B.C.
