Editor:
To characterize unrealized revenues as ‘losses’ (‘Local cherry growers facing losses due to cheap, plentiful international cherries’ Osoyoos Times, Aug.5, 2009), although fashionable in business circles is at best misleading, if not deceitful.
Though sympathetic to their cause, being a grower myself, agriculture is nothing if not an ongoing game of chance.
Forecasts and hoped-for revenues are never certain.
If these are ‘losses,’ then surely I should pine for my lost love, Scarlett Johansson.
Might even be a news story in that.

BENCH DONORS DISGUSTED BY VANDALISM
Editor:
To celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary my wife and I decided to donate a bench to the town.
Imagine how upset we were when we visited it for the first time and discovered the bench covered with graffiti, with the “F…” word prominently displayed, together with other derogatory remarks.
We would like to say to the individuals responsible that they made two 80-year-olds disgusted by their actions.
What makes them think they have the right to vandalize something, which is not theirs.
They would certainly be the first to object if someone did it to their property.
However, we would like to express our appreciation to Osoyoos Public Works for their prompt and courteous attention to rectify the problem.

HST RAISES MORE LOCAL IRE
Editor:
I read Mr. Slater’s article on the HST and as I understand it, those people with a low income will get their tax back and people that can purchase their goods and services through their businesses will pay little tax.
What his article tells me is that those of us that work for a living or have a small pension will be required to make up the two billion plus in taxes the Liberals are removing from the business community.
I never thought politicians were smart but for Mr. Slater to tell me business will reduce prices shows me he must think I’m an idiot, or is it just another Liberal fairy tale.
As it was the Conservatives that offered the Liberals a billion dollars to instigate the HST I will get a chance to vote against them a few years before I get to vote against the Liberals.
But their turn will come.
