An open letter to our premier, honourable ministers and elected representatives:

On May 23, 2019, the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy announced that the number of recreational campsites in B.C. provincial parks will be increased by 600 sites. The increase acknowledges the need for affordable recreational accommodation for citizens who enjoy the camping experience in B.C.

It was disappointing to learn that none of the increased sites will be situated in the Osoyoos and Oliver areas, where vacationers enjoy Canada’s warmest lake, outstanding hiking and biking trails, and numerous other opportunities for outdoor recreation; and where RV parks are drastically limited and full to capacity during the summer months and longer.

In view of the provincial government’s acknowledgment that more campsites are needed, and in anticipation of the proposed national park becoming reality in the South Okanagan, I respectfully submit this proposal.

There is a large property at the north end of Osoyoos Lake that once was a campsite – Willow Beach. It transitioned in recent years from a popular campground to development property and has sat undeveloped through at least two ownership changes and development proposals. The property is adjacent to oxbow wetlands, part of which is under Ducks Unlimited stewardship. It is adjacent to Osoyoos Indian Band land, farms, vineyards and trails.  It is in a perfect location for a campground and interpretive centre.

My proposal is for BC Parks to acquire the Willow Beach property, perhaps in partnership with the Osoyoos Indian Band, for a new provincial campground that would enable recreationists to enjoy the experience of camping on the shore of Canada’s warmest lake, in Canada’s only desert, in an area of unique outdoor opportunities.

Sincerely,

Eleanore Dempster, Osoyoos
